Plan for summer social events

The summer is still in full swing, and we hope all of you are having fun get-togethers with family and friends.

We know that it is often difficult for full-time caregivers to take the time to go to social functions, but socializing is not only important for your own health, but also the health of your disabled or elderly loved one. Packing up and taking your loved one to a game night, church potluck or backyard barbecue may seem too stressful, but with just a little planning in advance, everything will go smoothly.

Considering your loved ones limitations will help you be prepared for bumps in the road when going to a social function. These adaptive aids are good for carrying and can be invaluable when stuck in a bind.

Drinking beverages independently

Long Flexible Straw

Long Flexible Straw

Many of our loved ones must use straws to be able to drink independently, but let’s face it: half the time, we forget to carry straws with us. Carry our package of ten Long Flexible Straws with you wherever you go. This small planning can make a big difference. Instead of having to sit with your loved one the whole time and lift their drink for them, you can go mingle with other people and give your loved one the independence to do the same.

Eating comfortably means more socializing

One of the greatest social activities we engage in as human beings is sharing food together. If you and your loved one have to work hard just so your loved one can eat, it may be hard to socialize with others at the same time.

GripWare Scooper Plate

Grant your loved one the ability to stick and scoop independently with the GripWare Scooper Plate. This adaptive plate features a non-skid bottom and a gradually rising rim for sticking and scooping with one hand.

Dycem No Slip 8 inch Round Mat

If your loved one is able to use a regular plate but has trouble with the plate slipping, carry our small Dycem No Slip 8 inch Round Mat.

Tenura Small Table Pad

The Tenura Small Table Pad is also good for traveling. Keep a few in the car for use at social functions.

A bib that doesn’t look like a bib

Cravaat Dining Scarf

Black Cravaat Dining Scarf

Many of our loved ones use bibs, but wearing bibs can be embarrassing to people who would rather keep as low a profile as possible. The Black Cravaat Dining Scarf looks like a normal scarf, and the fact your loved one is using it as a bib will remain a secret!

Don’t put off socializing this summer because of a loved one’s disability. Get out and about with daily living aids that will allow socializing to be fun and enjoyable again.
