May is National Carrots and Cauliflower Month. Not only are carrots good to help protect against arthritis inflammation, but they are a low-carb source of sustenance. There are many dishes you can make with carrots and cauliflower, as the two vegetables go very well together.
However, arthritis can get in the way of preparing healthy dishes, such as cauliflower rice or sautéed carrots. Cutting vegetables almost doesn’t seem worth the pain and frustration arthritis can bring to the table.
There are a number of knife products and cutting strategies you can try to bring pleasure back to your kitchen experience. These include sharp knives with ergonomic handles, knives with differently angled handles, and special kitchen tools like adapted cutting boards and special measuring cups. Let’s take a look at all of these and show you what choices we have to offer in each category.
A really sharp knife, such as the professionally made DuoGlide Paring Knife is essential for relieving the amount of pressure you have to exert with your arthritic hand.
Furthermore, as you can see in the video, the DuoGlide Paring Knife features an ultra soft, right-sized handle that can be gripped in several ways.
The OXO Good Grips Slicer Knife is another ergonomic option we offer and is large enough (8 inches) to cut large florets of cauliflower. Its built-up, pressure-absorbing processed rubber handle takes pressure off the hands and provides a natural, comfortable feel.
Some people with arthritis prefer knives that can be held at a right angle, such as the Vertical Grip Professional Helper Knife. The ability to push down from a right angle eliminates the need for complex finger and wrist positioning required by traditional knives. Furthermore, the Helper Knife is angled in such a way to facilitate an easy rocking motion that helps slice food with minimal force.
The Easi-Grip Grater is another example of a right-angled utensil. This easy grater can be used to make those delicious carrot and cauliflower recipes, such as coleslaw or a new invention we are excited about: low-carb cauliflower rice!
We encourage you to take a look at some of our other adapted kitchen aids that can help with your vegetable slicing and paring.
Measure those healthy cups of carrots more easily with the 4 Cup Angled Measuring Cup by OXO Good Grips. This cup features an ergonomic handle and a scale that allows you to look down and see the measurement without having to lift the cup to eye level.
The Swedish Cutting Board holds vegetables in place for a convenient, one-handed cutting experience.
If you’ve forgotten about your favorite carrot and/or cauliflower dishes lately, then revisit them and other vegetable delights with these handy products.
