Iced Tea Month 2014: Find a straw that is right for you

Happy National Iced Tea Month to all our patrons and fans! There is no better time than June, the beginning of summer, to celebrate the most consumed beverage in the world next only to water.

Iced tea is a beverage of great tradition here in the U.S., where 80 percent of households keep tea readily on hand. Iced tea has existed for a long time but appears to have been popularized at the World’s Fair in St. Louis in 1904, when Richard Blechynden, a tea vendor, served cold tea to visitors.

Traditionally, iced tea is taken through a straw, especially at restaurants. While this makes it convenient for people with disabilities who can’t lift glasses, not all straws are accessible to people with certain limitations. If you need to get some good straws for your friend or loved one with a disability, consider these options.

1. Long straws

For those who may sit in a high wheelchair or who cannot tilt their head easily, simply adding a few inches to the straw length may do just the trick. Instead of going through the trouble of manually connecting one straw to another, buy some longer straws to have on hand.

If you’re still looking for an even longer straw, look no farther than than the Extra Long Flexible Drinking Straws, which measure a whopping 28 inches.

2. One-way straws

One way straws make for easy sipping by keeping the liquid in the straw between sips.

Empowering your loved one to drink more with these straws is good for their health, especially if they are iced tea fans. Iced tea works as a good low-calorie way to refresh and hydrate during summer.
