How to Peel an Apple with One Hand

October is National Apple Month. We're going to look at how people with various impairments can peel an apple (and other fruits and veggies) with one hand.

Many people are limited to using only one hand for many daily activities whether it be because of arthritis, disability, stroke, or some other impairment. We’re all about finding practical ways of adapting to these types of challenges to make life a little easier.

With that said, October is National Apple Month. Apples not only taste great, but they represent good health and learning. Indeed, apples are good for your body and mind. That said, they bring with them their own challenge for people who don’t have full use of both hands. In this article, we’re going to look at how you can peel an apple (and other fruits and veggies) with one hand.

Ways to secure fruits and vegetables for one-handed peeling

Veggie and Fruit Holder

Veggie and Fruit Holder

Veggie and Fruit Holder. This is the most versatile way to hold fruits and vegetables in place. The Veggie and Fruit Holder attaches to any smooth surface with its large suction base. Atop the base are two sharp, plastic prongs which serve to hold the apple or other food item in place.

Peeling Plate

Peeling Plate. The Peeling Plate is an adapted plate that has an attached Veggie and Fruit Holder. Similarly, its two sharp plastic prongs hold fruits and vegetables in place. It includes a non-slip mat that can be placed under the plate to keep it from sliding around while peeling. All its parts are dishwasher safe.

Swedish Cutting Board

Swedish Cutting Board

Swedish Cutting Board. A complete solution for cutting and peeling with one hand, the Swedish Cutting Board has two methods of securing fruits and vegetables. Its stainless steel spikes can hold an apple in much the same way as the products discussed above. The Swedish Cutting Board also includes a vise to hold larger food items, jars, or mixing bowls.

Good Grips Swivel Peeler

Good Grips Swivel Peeler

The Good Grips Swivel Peeler provides comfortable and safe peeling by providing a cushioned, built up handle and a stainless steel swiveling blade. The handle is built up and cushioned to ease tension in the hand and provides an excellent non-slip grip, even when wet. The swiveling blade allows for easy peeling with less wrist movement. The Good Grips Swivel Peeler is dishwasher safe.
