We’re not sure who’s in charge of all the holidays and observances that take place throughout the year. While some special days are backed by official presidential proclamations, many other informal and little-known holidays are not. For instance, Go Fishing Day (June 18) has unknown origins, while National Catfish Day (June 25) was definitively established by President Ronald Wilson Reagan. However these holidays got created, one thing is for certain: It must be no coincidence that Go Fishing Day and National Catfish Day occur in the same month.
The Gipper proclaimed in 1987, “Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim June 25, 1987, as National Catfish Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
We’re not really sure what catfish ceremonies are taking place this month, but probably the best way you can observe Catfish Day is simply to eat a lot of fried catfish. For those with mobility limitations, here are some of our adaptive aids that will help you in the catfish-eating process, from catching the fish yourself to frying it up back at home.
According to Fish and Game Magazine, catfishing is largely a waiting game. But that doesn’t mean you have to hold the line all that time yourself, especially if you have hand weakness or other limitations. The Fishing Pole Holder clamps to the tubes on your wheelchair, or alternatively, it can be clamped to lawn chairs or beach chairs.
While you are out by the waters, try our EZ Access Scooter Pack. This is a versatile bag that fits onto the back of wheelchairs and scooters and has deep side pockets and large privacy compartments. Easily reach around back to grab your soda, sandwich or bait container.
After making a few big catches, go home and fry up your prizes in a large pot or pan using our Pan Holder. The Pan Holder lets you manipulate contents, stir or flip while the pan stays securely to the stove top without slipping or sliding.
Celebrate the Southern tradition of tasty fried catfish on a day that has gained national recognition and importance: National Catfish Day.
