Origins of the month

National Wheelchair Beautification Month was established by author and illustrator Horace Knowles, who started a tradition that has taken off beyond what he probably imagined. It has transformed from a tradition geared toward decorating wheelchairs with flowers to doing all kinds of crazy and zany things with wheelchairs.
