If you’re looking for something to do during this month of July, you could try decking out your wheelchair or your friend’s wheelchair for National Wheelchair Beautification Month.
National Wheelchair Beautification Month was established by author and illustrator Horace Knowles, who started a tradition that has taken off beyond what he probably imagined. It has transformed from a tradition geared toward decorating wheelchairs with flowers to doing all kinds of crazy and zany things with wheelchairs.
Wheelchair Beautification Month is a time to have fun and take a break from seeing your wheelchair as a cold, utilitarian piece of metal. Jazz things up with some of our decorative wheelchair accessories.
The Awesome Grip Wheelchair Hand Rim Covers are beautiful, as well as efficient. Put them on your wheelchair rim and enjoy the comfortable grip of the cell foam base. Choose the design that fits your personality: dark blue faux suede, smiley faces or patriotic American flag.
If you’re a fan of the color blue, buy the Wheelchair Carry-All Backpack. No need to buy a normal gray bag, when you can shine with personality with this bright blue bag that is also useful for carrying books, groceries and other heavy items. Your items are protected by the waterproof nylon.
Horace Knowles’ original idea for Wheelchair Beautification Month was “attaching a florist’s water tube near the top of a wheelchair by means of Velcro and inserting the real or artificial flower of your choice. It brightens the day not only for the wheelchair occupant, but for everyone they pass.”
Following this same spirit, we offer up the Fishing Pole Holder, which can be clamped onto the metal tubing of many wheelchairs. While it’s made for fishing, you could also stuff in a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
The Folding Safety Flag is used for visibility purposes, but use it around the office or among friends to hold a few flowers. You could also wear decorative flags, such as your favorite pro football team flag. Wear American flags during patriotic holidays.
Create a beautiful conversation piece this Wheelchair Beautification Month with these creative adaptive aids.
