Men are different from women in many ways, including nutritional needs. Men need specific nutrients that help them keep muscle mass as they age, prevent cancer of the prostate and more.
Of course, many of the foods that men like the most are not always the best choices for good health. But as we all know, a healthy diet, combined with physical activity can prevent many diseases, including heart disease and cancer. Experts note that nutrients that are good for the heart also improve circulation to other areas of the body, and those nutrients also provide protection against cancer and many other chronic diseases.
Some of the best foods to maintain men’s health are:
- Oysters – A few oysters contain a full day’s supply of zinc, which is one of the most important antioxidants. Research indicates that zinc could protect against cell damage that leads to prostate cancer.
- Bananas – This fruit is a good source of quick energy and has a lot of potassium. This is very important to regulate nerves, heartbeat, and blood pressure. Diets that have a lot of potassium and magnesium also can reduce chances of stroke. Bananas also have vitamin B-6, which helps form red blood cells and helps the immune system.
- Fatty fish – This includes salmon, sardines, tuna, mackerel and herring. All of them contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are polyunsaturated fats that help the heart, circulation, and immune system.
- Broccoli – This cruciferous vegegtable helps to prevent heart disease and cancer. It is full of vitaman C, beta-carotene, and potassium. A Harvard study found that people who eat five servings of broccoli per week were 50% as likely to get bladder cancer. This type of cancer affects two to three times more men than women.
- Brazil nuts – These nuts from Brazil are full of magnesium and selenium, which are strong antioxidants that can prevent heart disease and cancer.
- Whole grains – Many men get plenty of carbs but not the right type. Wholegrain bread and pasta are good choices, as are oatmeal and barley, which are high in soluble fiber and vitamin B.
